Should I Repair or Replace My Windows?

Should I Repair or Replace My Windows?

Have you been pondering what to do about your windows that you notice aren’t functioning like they used to? Do you need to replace them or repair them? A number of things can happen to your windows over time, but not all window problems require the same treatment. When it comes to window replacement or window repair, it’s best to assess the problem first in order to make a decision regarding the two options. Check out these different scenarios to decide whether a window replacement or window repair is best.

Window Repair Scenarios

The Appearance of Defects

Windows can have certain cosmetic defects such as blemishes, chips, scratches, bumps, and dents. These are generally easy to spot and can be repaired fairly easily. Chipped windowpane can be repaired with an appropriate resin. Certain blemishes can be removed with gentle cleaners. Some sanding and repainting of window frames can rejuvenate the visual aesthetic of your windows. Oftentimes when dealing with appearance defects, a simple DIY job may suffice.

Dirty Glass

Windows get dirty and the exterior portion, in particular, takes a beating from the elements, including, rain, snow, etc. If you don’t perform regular cleaning on your windows, dirt can accumulate, but that’s an issue that you can easily tackle by yourself or with the help of professional cleaners. Keep in mind that dirt trapped between window panes won’t be removed by washing the exterior.

Minor Hardware Issues

Some difficulty maneuvering your windows could be due to problems caused by a hardware component. If the integrity of your window is compromised as a result of a problem with a lock, handle or hinges, find the exact source. Sometimes a buildup of debris or dirt in and around these hardware components can interfere with the normal operation of your windows. Some solutions can include cleaning with soap and water, lubricating the hardware or scraping away the impeding dirt buildup.

Window Replacement Scenarios

Condensation Between Window Panes

If your window is experiencing condensation, often identified by cloudiness between window panes, it is safe to assume that moisture has made its way between the panes. This is a sign that the seal that holds the window glass into the frame is punctured and has failed. Not only does it let in moisture, but dirt can also become trapped between the panes as well. This will impact energy efficiency in your home and potentially cause you to have higher energy bills. When condensation happens, it’s time to replace your windows.

Warped Window

A warped window can prevent your windows from operating normally. Warping occurs over time and is generally caused by exposure to moisture, and can damage your window frame, compromising the windows’ structural integrity. It is not sufficient to simply replace the windows; you will need a new frame as well.

Windows Fail to Open and Lock Properly

Windows that fail to open and lock correctly are a big security risk. You want to protect your home and your loved ones, and if your windows become an entry and exit point for criminals to enter your home, you limit your ability to do so. You also don’t want windows that will not open because that could prove disastrous in the case of an emergency. If your windows pose a security risk or one for an accident, then replace it.
