5 Tips for Cleaning Your Windows in the Winter

Amid a harsh New England winter, cleaning your windows is probably pretty low on your to-do list. However, your windows should be cleaned year-round, especially during the winter! Between the snow, wind, and dirt that surrounds your home, you can probably notice how dirty your windows are getting. Here are some tips for cleaning your windows safely and efficiently this winter season!

Gather Supplies First

Try to avoid trudging snow and dirt back inside your house every few minutes just because you forgot your cleaning supplies. Here are a few things you’ll need before you head out: window cleaning solution, a squeegee, paper towels, and microfiber cloths if you have them. Aside from cleaning supplies, be sure to dress warmly!

Remove Dirt

Before applying any sort of liquid to the windows, be sure to remove any dirt or debris from on or around the windows and panes. Especially during the harsh winter months, storms and wind are bound to create a buildup so be thorough and remove all layers of the accumulated dust or dirt before applying the cleaning solution to your windows.

Use Warm Water

Even though it’s cold outside, do NOT use hot water to clean your windows! The difference in temperature of the cold glass window and the hot water can cause your glass to crack. Similarly, be sure to avoid using very cold water as well, as it can freeze quickly on your already cold windows. So, room temperature or warm water is the way to go. Just add windshield wiper fluid to prevent it from freezing so fast, and you’re ready to go.

Check the Weather

Do yourself a favor and check the forecast before you decide to start cleaning. Don’t decide to clean your windows on an incredibly windy, stormy, freezing day. On the other hand, experts note that it is better to clean your windows on a cloudy day as opposed to a day that the sun is shining directly on your windows. The sun’s reflections on the windows may hide dirty spots or streaks that you won’t be able to see, and therefore can’t treat.

Work Quickly and Efficiently

It is in your best interest to clean your windows in a timely manner for multiple reasons. First, it means spending less time outside in the winter weather when you could be warming up indoors. Second, if you work quickly it reduces the likelihood that the cleaning solution will freeze after it is sprayed on the windows. Be sure to spray the solution and immediately squeegee the window and if necessary, use paper towels to clear up any residue.
